An analysis of the effect of 15 years of research in organic food systems in Denmark showed that it has had a high impact on the development of the sector. There are three main reasons: First of all, the content of research programs and the funded projects have been closely aligned with the needs of the industry as expressed by farmers, advisors and organizations. Second, many of the projects have had close contact to advisors and farmers securing continuous dissemination resulting in rapid application of results. A three-day workshop on modelling weed population dynamics partially sponsored by the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) was held in October 2006 at Research Centre Flakkebjerg. 24 participants attended the workshop from 8 countries, mainly Europe and USA. The aim of the workshop was to gather some of those active and interested in the field, i.e. most of the participants had either published papers on weed population dynamic models or had a model under development. By gathering these people, it was our hope to learn from each other and possibly benefit by increasing the knowledge and use of each other's work. A model is being developed which describes the population dynamics of annual weeds and how it is affected by crop rotation, cultivation practices and weed control. The model aims to predict the development of a certain weed species in order to plan crop rotation and cultivation practices to minimize the risk of proliferation. The model does not predict the exact number of weeds expected to be found in a certain year or crop, but rather the general development over a number of years. We investigated the effects on annual weeds of location, weed control, manure application and catch crops and their interactions in a crop rotation with cereals and pulses for grain during conversion to organic farming in order to better understand the combined effects of management. An experiment with a four-year crop rotation (spring barley/undersown ley, grass-clover, winter wheat, pea/barley) was carried out from 1997 to 2000 under organic conditions at three locations in Denmark with four treatments: with and without catch crop, and with and without manure. The emergence behaviour of weed species in relation to cultural and meteorological events was studied. Dissimilarities between populations in dormancy and germination ecology, between-year maturation conditions and seed quality and burial site climate, all contribute to potentially unpredictable variability. Therefore, a weed emergence data set was produced for weed seeds of Stellaria media and Chenopodium album matured and collected from three populations (Italy, Sweden and UK). Mathematical modelling is a commonly used tool for studying the long-term dynamics of weed populations in agriculture. This was reflected in our review by the large number of scientific papers (134 original publications) and the continuing need to gain an overview over this fast developing field (20 previous review papers were found). In long-term organic crop rotation experiments for cereal production, stubble cultivation to control perennial weeds increased nitrogen leaching compared to catch crops grown after harvest. Stubble cultivation contributed to the control of Elymus repens on a sandy soil, but not to the control of Cirsium arvense on a loamy soil. Manure application had a tendency to decrease E. repens density in one rotation at the sandy soil. Grass-clover green manure decreased C. arvense in the succeeding crops. Despite high infestations of perennial weeds, yields were at the same level with as without stubble cultivation. A crop rotation experiment was established in 1997 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: crop rotation, catch crop and manure. Catch crop reduced nitrate leaching, but prohibited stubble cultivation. The use of catch crops resulted in increased levels of perennial weeds (E. repens) at one location, while at another; the level of C. arvense was not affected by catch crops, when compared with the use of stubble cultivation. Management of perennial weeds should include considerations of where in a crop rotation to use stubble cultivation, and this should preferably not be after a pulse crop. Catch crops are a more profitable way to manage C. arvense than stubble cultivations. |

The complexity of organic farming requires farmers to have a very high level of knowledge and skills, but exchange on organic farming management techniques remains limited. The thematic network OK-Net Arable under Horizon 2020 has the aim to improve the exchange of innovative and traditional knowledge among farmers, farm advisers and scientists to increase productivity and quality in organic arable cropping in Europe. Organic Eprints is an Open Access archive for research in organic food and farming. While based in Europe, it is international and open for deposits from all over the world. Since the start in 2002, the archive has steadily grown to over 10,000 deposits in 2010. Open Access enables more users to download and read the deposited papers, and this may lead to increased citations. Development of a platform based on Organic Eprints among other agriculture-related archives should make search even stronger. Catch crops reduced nitrate leaching in both rotations at Jyndevad. The same tendency was seen in one rotation at Flakkebjerg. At Jyndevad, stubble cultivations decreased Elymus repens density in the treatments without catch crops. Application of manure decreased the E. repens density in one rotation. At Flakkebjerg, there was a lower infestation of C. arvense in the rotation with than without grass-clover, with least biomass in the crop the year after grass-clover.
